And just like that, our first baby parrot of the season has arrived! This nestling Amazon was found on the sidewalk in Ocean Beach, being pecked at by crows. Two kind people noticed the parrot on the ground, immediately reached out to us, and were quickly able to coordinate transporting the baby over to our center! The nestling was initially placed in an incubator for warmth, and started on pain medication and anti-inflammatories for the wounds inflicted by the crows. Although most of the wounds were superficial, the location of injuries on the head was concerning, as was some bruising on the abdomen, likely due to a far fall from the nest. Unfortunately after several rounds of feeding, our trained staff noticed that the parrot's respiratory rate was increasing, and its breathing became very labored. The baby was then transferred to our colleagues at the Avian and Exotics Department of PESC San Diego for oxygen support, fluid therapy, and antibiotics to clear up lung congestion. Sadly after several hours of intensive care from our veterinary partners, the nestling's condition continued to decline, and it went into respiratory distress. Given the very young age, injuries, and respiratory symptoms, the decision was made to humanely euthanize the parrot. This patient highlights the wide community that contributes to helping care for the wild parrots in Southern California! From the individuals that found the parrot and jumped into action, to our team of wildlife rehabilitators and veterinarians, it takes lots of resources and knowledgeable individuals to help these birds.
