Miller Home of Lynchburg, VA

Miller Home of Lynchburg, VA, is a private, nonprofit organization licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services. Founded in 1875, it was initially known as the Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum. The home was established through a bequest by local businessman Samuel Miller, who left land and an endowment to support young women in the community.

Mission and Purpose

Miller Home's mission is to provide short- or long-term care and guidance to girls ages four through twenty-one who cannot live with their families. The organization aims to create a supportive, non-institutional environment that fosters growth and development, allowing each girl to reach her highest potential. It seeks to help residents become responsible and productive citizens.

Operations and Funding

Miller Home operates entirely on private donations and does not accept federal, state, or local funding. This financial model allows the organization to tailor its programs to meet the specific needs of each resident. The home utilizes a sliding scale for family support, making it accessible to families without the resources to pay for group home care.

Approach to Care

Miller Home employs a trauma-informed approach to create positive relationships and support for its residents. Recognizing the impact of childhood trauma, the organization connects residents with mental health services through community agencies. Additionally, it offers an Independent Living Program designed to equip residents with skills necessary for success in adulthood.

Historical Context and Impact

Since its inception, Miller Home has served over 1,000 girls. Originally capable of caring for approximately 100 girls at a time, it now focuses on a smaller, diverse population from Lynchburg and across Virginia. Despite scaling down, the organization remains committed to Samuel Miller's original intention of providing care and support to young women.

Financial Overview

As a 501(c)(3) organization, donations to Miller Home are tax-deductible. According to its most recent financial data, the organization relies heavily on contributions and other income sources to fund its charitable disbursements and operational costs.

Governance and Structure

Miller Home's leadership includes key employees like the Executive Director and Program Director, along with a board of directors who contribute their time voluntarily. This structure supports the organization's mission-driven activities and ensures effective governance.
