Founded in 1997, the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society promotes Portuguese culture and shared whaling heritage by raising awareness and pride within New England’s Azorean-American community. AMHS educates the public about Azorean maritime history and Azorean culture, and especially the skills and crafts related to Azorean whaling history, seamanship, and its connection to New Bedford, MA. As a cultural exchange, we offer special programs and opportunities to kids and adults where they can experience the Azorean Whaleboats first hand and learn all about this rich maritime heritage. Through our shared maritime history, we are able to expand this experience to the Azores for a full immersion in the Azorean culture and the story of the Azorean Whaleboats.
