May 20th Society | Celebrating the Spirit of Mecklenburg Charlotte Americas Cradle of Independence May 20 1775 The start of something revolutionary Welcome to the official website for the 250th Anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence a celebration of the courage vision and determination that defined Charlotte as the birthplace of American independence. The May 20th Societys goal is to raise awareness of Charlottes unique role as the first to declare independence. From historical programs and events to inspiring stories of local heroes like Captain James Jackour very own Paul RevereMecDec 250 reminds us of the courage and vision that sparked a revolution. Lets remind Americans where the fight for freedom began put Charlotte in the spotlight and serve as the kickstarter that our nation is set to celebrate on July 4th 2026.
