1520 Arts

1520 Arts is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Hip Hop arts as a viable path to success through practice, performance, and education. The organization focuses on growing the Hip Hop community in Utah, providing opportunities for local youth to develop their skills through competitions, workshops, performances, and educational programs[1][2].

History

The organization originated from The Bboy Federation, which was founded by James "Pyro" Karren and Joshua "Text" Perkins. Initially, they organized a series of events called the X-Series to revitalize the declining bboy scene in Utah between 2006 and 2008. By 2009, they had developed a league-style competition that benefited the local dance community. In 2012, The Bboy Federation was awarded 501(c)(3) non-profit status, allowing it to expand its programs, including after-school initiatives and stage productions. By 2019, it transitioned into 1520 Arts to better represent its broadened scope and mission[2].

Programs and Mission

1520 Arts operates several key initiatives:

  • The HERC: A facility offering classes, courses, and after-school options.
  • They Reminisce: A stage production.
  • Community Outreach: Provides art and dance programs to underprivileged communities[2].

The organization aims to inspire participants to succeed not only in Hip Hop but also in life. It seeks to expose local artists to national talent and provide a platform for growth and networking within the Hip Hop community[1][2].

Governance

As of recent data, the board of directors includes Joshua Perkins and other members. The organization ensures a diverse and inclusive board recruitment process and adheres to ethics and transparency policies[3].
