We’re excited to announce Do Good recently received a $10,000 grant for unrestricted use from OnPoint Community Credit Union. The grant, which is just one piece of an ongoing relationship with the Portland-based company, is critical to Do Good’s ability to continue daily operations across our nearly 20 shelter and housing programs throughout Portland and SW Washington. OnPoint employees Aimee Ten Eyck-Shaffer and Nick Styles are both members of Do Good’s board and Veterans themselves — Aimee from the Air Fore and Nick from the U.S. Army. It’s a privilege to have them on our board, where they provide Veteran voices and leadership to serve our participants. “OnPoint has demonstrated their continued commitment to Veterans,” said Do Good CEO Daniel Hovanas. “Having two Veteran staff serving on our board, regular volunteer engagements, consistently supporting our events and extending this grant showcases that OnPoint is sincere in the ways they show up for unhoused veterans. Tackling issues of houselessness requires providing different approaches to shelter design. Not every model works for everyone. Holly had lived nearly a decade outside in Portland with her partner Remi before a cancer diagnosis forced her to seriously consider seeking shelter. Even still, she remained wary of congregate spaces working for her as she needed a more isolated space to recuperate during treatments. So, Holly was referred to Do Good’s Roseway Motel shelter: an alternative shelter model where Do Good participants have their own individual rooms. It offered Holly the privacy she needed to recover and breathe easier. “We would’ve stayed outside if it was the other way,” Holly said, referencing the prospect of staying in congregate shelter models. Months later, Holly and Remi are in the final stages of getting their own apartment after working with Do Good staff to lift their remaining barriers to housing: things like identification documents and sifting through legal webs. “I’m just super grateful that we were able to get in here, it’s been life-changing,” Holly said about the Roseway Motel Shelter. We know a world without Veteran houselessness is possible. Every day more than 450 Veterans find themselves houseless on the streets of our city alongside more than 6000 other adults children. We are certain that this crisis can be solved we are building the solutions necessary to end Veteran homelessness in Portland. We hold one simple belief No human being should experience homelessness particularly not a Veteran.
