Description

United Federation of Doll Clubs Inc

The United Federation of Doll Clubs Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the hobby of doll collecting. Founded in 1949, it aims to be the leading authority in research, education, conservation, collecting, and appreciation of dolls.

History

The organization's history began with Mary E. Lewis, a renowned doll collector, author, and lecturer from Brooklyn, New York. In 1937, Lewis organized a meeting at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City after appearing on a radio broadcast by Mary Margaret McBride. This event attracted eight women who shared her passion for dolls, leading to the formation of the National Doll and Toy Collectors Club. Over the years, Lewis traveled extensively, establishing more units across the United States. However, it wasn't until 1949 that the United Federation of Doll Clubs was officially incorporated.

Mission

The organization's mission is centered around several key objectives:

  • Research: Conducting studies and gathering knowledge about various types of dolls.
  • Education: Providing educational resources and workshops for doll collectors and enthusiasts.
  • Conservation: Preserving dolls and doll-related artifacts for future generations.
  • Collecting: Promoting the hobby of doll collecting through exhibitions, events, and publications.
  • Appreciation: Fostering a deeper appreciation for dolls as significant cultural and historical artifacts.

Activities and Operations

UFDC hosts national conventions, publishes newsletters, and supports local doll clubs across the U.S. It also operates a museum that showcases a vast collection of dolls and offers educational programs.

Governance and Structure

While the organization is structured as a federation of local clubs, it operates under a non-profit framework, adhering to strict financial and governance standards as required by the IRS.

Impact

As one of the largest and most influential doll collecting organizations, UFDC plays a significant role in preserving doll history, promoting doll collecting as a hobby, and providing a community for enthusiasts worldwide.
