Congratulations to Christina Angelini on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award—the highest achievement in Girl Scouting! What is your project about? My issue to address was to promote youth to get involved to preserve the history of Veteran's who served our country; including that females can make a difference in preserving ships and aircraft. The life and freedoms we have today are due to the service and protection provided by Veterans. As generations age that served in WW2 and Vietnam, many youth are not aware that they can help undertake physical projects or educational aspects of memorials in their community to ensure their future existence. By presenting and working projects, I hoped to inspire youth involvement in restoring these National Historic Landmarks to pass our mutual history to another generation of Americans. As a side issue, vocational work such as welding, electrical, painting, and other hands on projects were highlighted to showcase a healthy idea of getting out and working with your hands. Growing up with phones and the internet, many youth do not get together in person or learn different skills. This project hoped to pass along the interest and responsibility of maintaining our common heritage to a new generation. Why was your project important to you? One reason is to show that girls and youth can do the same work, efforts, and vocational skills into any project they choose to accomplish much like the iconic Rosie the Riveter did in World War II. Woman can weld, refurbish areas, build items, and manage complete projects that make a difference. Also, Veterans such as my grandfathers, great grandfather, and many others sacrificed and served our country to protect us and the freedoms that we enjoy. The story of their service and sacrifice to all of us should be remembered and honored. Telling their story and presenting their service to our community allows for better appreciation and understanding of our veterans and how much we owe them for our freedoms. By helping to undertake historical preservation, youth can show that we have not forgotten their service or the heritage they have passed down to us. For me, I was able to undertake projects on the ship my grandfather Mike Angelini served on in the US Navy during the Vietnam War.
