Fraternal Order of Eagles

The Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) is an international non-profit organization founded on February 6, 1898, in Seattle, Washington. Initially composed of theater owners, the organization evolved to include members from various backgrounds, united by the principles of liberty, truth, justice, and equality.

History

The F.O.E. was established by six theater owners—John Cort, brothers John W. and Tim J. Considine, Harry (H.L.) Leavitt, Mose Goldsmith, and Arthur Williams—who gathered in a Seattle shipyard to address a musicians' strike. After resolving the strike, they decided to form "The Order of Good Things," which later became the Fraternal Order of Eagles. The bald eagle was chosen as the official emblem, symbolizing strength and freedom[1].

The organization experienced rapid growth due to touring theater troupes, who spread the Eagles' ideals across the United States and Canada. Early membership benefits included funeral support and access to an aerie physician, ensuring no member would be buried in a potter's field[2].

Mission and Contributions

The F.O.E. is dedicated to making human life more desirable by promoting peace, prosperity, gladness, and hope[2]. Known for their philanthropy, the Eagles annually donate over $10 million to various charities, including funds for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, and spinal cord injuries[3][4]. They also support initiatives for children with disabilities and the aged[2].

Notably, the Fraternal Order of Eagles claims credit for influencing the establishment of Mother's Day in the United States and contributing to the development of Social Security[1]. They have also been involved in medical research and community improvement projects[4].

Structure

With more than 650,000 members across over 1,300 locations in the United States and Canada, the Eagles maintain a widespread presence[4]. Their local units, known as aeries, serve as community hubs for fundraising, social events, and member activities[2].

Women's Auxiliary

The women's auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles was established in 1927, marking an important expansion of the organization's membership and outreach efforts[2].

Charity and Community Engagement

The Eagles conduct numerous fundraisers annually, supporting major charities through grants. Their focus on community service and charitable giving has earned them the motto "People Helping People"[2][3].
