American Volkssport Association
The American Volkssport Association (AVA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States. It is the country's premier noncompetitive sports organization, dedicated to promoting physical fitness and community participation through various outdoor activities.
History
Volkssporting, which translates to "the sport of the people," originated in Germany in the mid-1960s. The concept was introduced to the U.S. in 1976, with the first event held in Fredericksburg, Texas, as part of the American Bicentennial celebrations. Initially known as the International Federation of Peoples’ Sports-USA (IFP-USA), the organization later changed its name to the American Volkssport Association to better reflect its national scope. AVA was officially recognized by the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV) in 1979.
Activities
AVA promotes noncompetitive outdoor events such as walking, hiking, biking, swimming, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Walking is the most popular activity, with standard distances typically set at 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) or 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). These events are designed to be enjoyable, safe, and accessible to participants of all ages and abilities.
Mission and Goals
The mission of AVA is to encourage family fitness, friendship, and fun through community participation in sanctioned events. The organization aims to promote physical fitness and good health by providing opportunities for stress-free exercise in scenic environments. AVA events are often held at historic and scenic sites, enhancing the enjoyment for participants.
Structure and Membership
AVA serves as an umbrella organization for over 350 chartered nonprofit sports clubs across the United States. These clubs sponsor more than 3,000 events annually, attracting participants from diverse backgrounds. While local or national membership is not required to participate in events, membership is encouraged and provides access to additional benefits such as the International Achievement Awards Program.
Governance
AVA is governed by a volunteer National Executive Council consisting of elected officers and regional directors. The organization is supported by a small paid staff.
Impact
Volkssporting events have become a significant part of many participants' lifestyles, with thousands completing numerous events and accumulating substantial distances over the years. The social benefits of participation, including friendships and family bonding, have been identified as key reasons why people continue to engage in volkssporting beyond their initial motivation of improving health.
