Davenport Shooting Assn
PROVIDED COMMUNITY WITH FACILITIES FOR RIFLE, PISTOL AND SHOTGUN PRACTICE AND INSTRUCTION IN THE SAFE HANDLING AND PROPER CARE OF FIREARMS
Davenport Shooting Association
The Davenport Shooting Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the traditional Schuetzen style of shooting in the United States. Founded on August 11, 1862, it traces its roots back to the traditions of German immigrants who formed rifle practice clubs in the mid-19th century. Despite the club's foundation in 1854 being disrupted by the Civil War, it was reestablished to promote rifle practice and has continuously operated since then.
Mission and Purpose
The association focuses on maintaining the Schuetzen style of shooting, which emphasizes offhand and, occasionally, bench shooting with specific types of firearms. Members primarily use single-shot cast bullet centerfire rifles with bullet velocities below 1500 fps and .22 rimfire rifles. The club does not permit the use of modern semi-automatic centerfire rifles and pistols or jacketed ammunition, distinguishing it from other gun clubs in the U.S.
Activities and Events
The Davenport Shooting Association hosts monthly shooting events, typically involving 200-yard offhand .22 rimfire competitions during the summer months and 50-foot offhand rimfire competitions during the winter. The annual King Shoot, held since 1863, is a significant event where competitors aim for a single shot closest to the center. The association also features a variety of other shooting contests, including 5-shot, 3-shot, and silhouette target matches.
Legacy and Tradition
The DSA is notable for its long-standing history and family involvement, with many members being descendants of original participants. This familial continuity highlights the organization's role in preserving cultural heritage and promoting shooting sports as a family activity.
Organizational History
Originally part of the Davenport Schuetzen Verein, the club was renamed the Davenport Shooting Association due to historical events such as anti-German sentiments during World War I. Despite these changes, the association has maintained its commitment to the Schuetzen tradition and continues to operate independently.
Today, the Davenport Shooting Association operates from a new range in Scott County near Princeton, Iowa, ensuring the continuation of its historical activities and traditions.
