As you walk onto the second floor, you’re met with the warm welcome from Julia Scarbrough’s portrait. She was the lady of the house in the early 1800’s and was known for her lavish parties and wonderful sense of humor. Her painting is so rich and vibrant that we can’t help but look every time we walk by! #shipsofthesea (fb)

Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum is closed today in observance of Memorial Day. 🇺🇸 We pause to honor and remember all U.S. service members who gave their lives in defense of our nation. Memorial Day is a time of solemn remembrance—a day to reflect on the immense cost of the freedoms we enjoy. Across generations, brave Americans have laid down their lives in service to country and cause. One powerful example of this sacrifice occurred on D-Day, June 6, 1944. As Allied forces launched the historic invasion of Normandy to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation, more than 4,400 Allied troops were killed—nearly 2,500 of them Americans. Among them were: U.S. Army soldiers who stormed fortified beaches under heavy fire. U.S. Navy sailors who piloted landing craft, shelled enemy positions, and suffered over 1,000 casualties, including the crew of the USS Corry, sunk off Utah Beach. U.S. Coast Guardsmen who landed troops and rescued the wounded from the waves—15 of whom died as lifesavers at sea. These men fought not only for victory, but for something greater: the hope of peace, the promise of liberty, and the belief that their sacrifice could build a better world. Today, we remember them—and all who made the ultimate sacrifice. We carry their legacy with gratitude and resolve. #MemorialDay #HonorTheFallen #ShipsOfTheSea #USArmy #USNavy #USCoastGuard #DDay (fb)
