For Women’s History Month, we remember the history of our foundation and the woman who helped propel it forward: In 1985, Salvadorans Carlos and Marina Castañeda, moved by the plight of earthquake victims in Soyapango, raised funds to hand out food baskets, which Marina turned into an annual holiday event. In 1997 as a gesture for their parents’ anniversary, the Castañeda’s four adult children sponsored four Soyapango students’ school tuition in Marina and Carlos’s name. The Carlos and Marina Castañeda Foundation began and Marina worked to expand its reach to give back to the community. Marina always sought to help those less fortunate, and the “Castañeda Kids” and grandkids continue the work to honor the memory of Marina/Mama/Maya.
