Kentucky Thoroughbred Association Inc
The Kentucky Thoroughbred Association Inc (KTA) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the Thoroughbred horse industry in Kentucky. In conjunction with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders (KTOB), it serves as a trade organization uniting owners, breeders, trainers, and other stakeholders in the industry.
Mission and Activities
- Advocacy and Legislation: The KTA works towards advocating for legislation that benefits the Thoroughbred industry. It collaborates with industry partners like the American Horse Council and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) to address legislative matters on both state and national levels.
- Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF): The KTA plays a significant role in managing the KTDF, which is designed to enhance the quality of racing in Kentucky by providing purse supplements for Kentucky-sired, Kentucky-foaled horses.
- Group Employee Benefits: The organization offers group health insurance to eligible Kentucky employers, primarily those involved in the Thoroughbred related businesses, through its partnership with Anthem.
History and Impact
Kentucky is renowned for its rich history in horse breeding and racing, with the KTA serving as a pivotal body in maintaining this reputation. As the largest producer of Thoroughbred foals in the United States, accounting for about 40% of the national foal crop, Kentucky is home to numerous prestigious breeding farms and sales. The KTA's efforts contribute significantly to promoting Kentucky's position at the forefront of Thoroughbred racing and breeding globally.
Leadership and Structure
Chauncey Morris serves as the Executive Director of both the KTA and KTOB, overseeing the strategic direction of these organizations. The leadership includes a Board of Directors, with Chris Baker holding a key role as President.
Achievements and Partnerships
Through its partnerships and initiatives, the KTA has been instrumental in negotiating favorable revenue structures for Kentucky purses and simulcasting agreements. Its collaboration with prominent racecourses like Churchill Downs and Keeneland further enhances its impact on the industry. The organization also provides informational support to both local and international stakeholders interested in Kentucky's equine sector.
Economic and Social Contributions
The KTA contributes to Kentucky's economy by supporting a large workforce involved in Thoroughbred breeding, training, and racing. Additionally, its activities promote cultural and historical practices associated with horse racing in the Bluegrass region.
