Washington Metro DachtoberFest Foundation
The Washington Metro DachtoberFest Foundation (WMDF) is a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) designation. It was established in early 2013 by a group of dachshund enthusiasts.
Mission and Activities
The main mission of WMDF is to raise awareness about serious veterinary health issues affecting dachshunds and other long and low breeds. This includes educating pet owners on the financial commitments of pet ownership, the importance of preventive care, and recognizing symptoms of life-threatening conditions such as Intervertebral Disc Disease, seizures, obesity, Cushing's disease, dental disease, and behavioral issues. By promoting knowledge and proactive healthcare, WMDF aims to improve pet health, reduce euthanasia, and decrease the number of dogs surrendered due to health-related issues.
Historically, one of the organization's prominent events was the Dachshund Dash, which featured fun activities like wiener dog races. However, the foundation no longer hosts its annual Dachtoberfest event. Since 2021, the Dachshund Enlightenment Foundation has taken over the reins of hosting dachshund-themed events, notably the RVA Dachtoberfest in Richmond, Virginia.
Legacy and Impact
Although WMDF no longer organizes its flagship event, its legacy continues through the efforts of organizations like the Dachshund Enlightenment Foundation, which has expanded the reach and spirit of dachshund-focused events in the region.
Financial and Legal Status
WMDF operates with a federal tax exemption under EIN 46-2452393.
As of recent years, the foundation has emphasized the importance of community involvement and awareness about pet health to ensure better care and outcomes for dachshunds and similar breeds.
