Williamsburg United Methodist Church

Overview

The Williamsburg United Methodist Church (WUMC) is a nonprofit organization deeply rooted in the historic city of Williamsburg, Virginia. With a history spanning over two centuries, the church plays a pivotal role in the community through its mission to make disciples for Jesus Christ by welcoming neighbors, nurturing faith, and transforming the world.

History

The Methodist movement began to take hold in the Williamsburg area in the summer of 1772 when Joseph Pilmore, a lay preacher sent by John Wesley, preached in the local theater and on Palace Green. Pilmore was welcomed by the rector of Bruton Parish Church, which allowed him to preach from their pulpit, fostering interest in Methodist teachings. Over time, the Methodist congregation grew and eventually became a distinct entity. The modern church building itself was initiated on July 21, 1963, when the Methodists gathered to break ground for their new church home.

Notable Pastors

Throughout its history, WUMC has been led by several prominent pastors, four of whom later became bishops: William McKendree (1808), Holland McTyeire (1866), John Granbery (1882), and C.P. Minnick (1980).

Mission and Ministries

WUMC is committed to serving the community through a wide array of ministries and services. Its mission is to spread God's love by nurturing faith and transforming lives. The church offers over 90 ministries that support both its congregation and the broader community.

Current Initiatives

In recent years, WUMC has embarked on significant capital campaigns to ensure its continued presence as a beacon in the community. These campaigns focus on maintaining and enhancing the church's facilities and programs, ensuring that WUMC remains a place where lives are transformed and the love of Christ is shared beyond its walls. The 2025 Capital Campaign, "Creating a Legacy of Faith. Envisioning a Future of Possibility," emphasizes the church's role in serving its members and the wider community through worship, service, and outreach.

Values and Beliefs

WUMC's values and beliefs are rooted in the principles of Methodism, which emphasize repentance and transforming grace. The church continues the legacy of John and Charles Wesley, who initiated the Methodist movement in the 18th century. Despite The United Methodist Church being officially formed in 1968, its foundational ideals date back to the early 18th century.
