Description

GISHRU

GISHRU is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in the United States, focused on providing humanitarian and educational experiences for Assyrians born in the Diaspora. Its mission involves organizing trips to the Assyrian homeland, fostering connections between Assyrians living in their ancestral lands and those in the Diaspora.

Purpose

The primary goal of GISHRU is to preserve Assyrian history, culture, and archaeological sites, while strengthening the Assyrian identity. This is achieved through educational and humanitarian initiatives, including trips that allow participants to explore historical sites, engage with local communities, and participate in cultural events.

Activities

Since 2008, GISHRU has annually organized trips around the time of the ancient Assyrian-Babylonian New Year (Akitu) in spring. These trips include visits to historical sites, Assyrian schools, and cultural events in regions such as the Nineveh Plains, Erbil, and Nohadra. Participants engage in activities that highlight the rich Assyrian heritage and help support local communities.

Project Initiatives

GISHRU participants are involved in surveying potential projects that support indigenous Assyrians. These projects are coordinated with partner organizations like the Assyrian Aid Society. Examples of past projects include the Nahla Irrigation Channel (2018), Rebuild Nineveh (2019), and support for the Assyrian IDP "Udrana" Camp (2017).

Partnerships

GISHRU collaborates with several organizations to achieve its goals, including the Assyrian Aid Society of Iraq, Khoyada (ChaldoAssyrian Student & Youth Union), and the Assyrian Democratic Movement.

Leadership

The organization is led by a team dedicated to Assyrian activism and community engagement. Key figures include Suzan Younan, a co-founder who lives in the Assyrian homeland, and Joseph V. Danavi, who serves as the internal affairs director while pursuing medical training.

Support

GISHRU relies on donations to continue its work. Contributions are tax-deductible and help sponsor young Assyrians from the Diaspora to participate in these life-changing journeys. Various individuals and organizations have supported GISHRU's initiatives over the years.
