This Mother’s Day weekend at El Refugio reminded us that the same moment can carry very different meaning shaped by where you’re coming from and what you’ve lived through. For one volunteer, hosting became an unexpected act of resistance: 🗣 “Never knew that hosting at the house could be such a powerful tangible way of resistance.” For a mother visiting her detained child, even a small gesture became a source of comfort: 💬 “Thank you for the hug and the flowers. Things like this make me cry, but not from sadness… A small gesture that had a positive effect on me.” At El Refugio, we hold space for all of it: sorrow and joy, anger and hope, the weight of injustice and the power of human connection.
