National Wild Turkey Federation

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of hunting heritage in North America. Founded in 1973, the NWTF has grown to become one of the most influential conservation groups in the region, with a membership base exceeding 250,000 individuals across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries.

History

The NWTF was established in response to declining wild turkey populations due to habitat loss and limited scientific understanding of the species. During its inception, there were approximately 1.3 million wild turkeys in North America. Over the years, through collaborative efforts with hunters, conservationists, and wildlife agencies, the NWTF has contributed significantly to increasing wild turkey populations, which have now surpassed 7 million birds.

Mission and Programs

The NWTF focuses on conserving and enhancing wildlife habitats, which it believes is crucial for maintaining robust wild turkey populations. It has conserved or improved more than 22 million acres of habitat since its inception. The organization supports scientific wildlife management and leverages partnerships with federal, state, and provincial agencies to implement large-scale conservation projects.

Some of the notable programs include:

• Making Tracks: A cooperative effort with state, federal, and provincial agencies to restore wild turkeys to suitable habitats. This program has facilitated the movement of over 192,000 wild turkeys across North America.
• Regional Habitat Programs: These programs provide resources such as seeds and seedlings to improve habitat quality across eight regions, including Operation Appleseed (Northeast), Operation Oak (Southeast), and Operation Heartland (Midwest).
• Education and Outreach: Initiatives like JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship), Women in the Outdoors, and Wheelin' Sportsmen aim to promote outdoor skills and conservation awareness among diverse groups.

Impact and Achievements

The NWTF has invested over half a billion dollars in conservation efforts and dedicated more than $9 million to wild turkey research projects. By leveraging partnerships and leveraging funding at a ratio of at least 4:1, the NWTF has created significant value from its investments. The organization also advocates for policies supporting conservation and hunting heritage, having contributed to landmark legislation like the Great American Outdoors Act.
