Coalition for Construction Safety (CCS)
Introduction
The Coalition for Construction Safety (CCS), formerly known as the Metro Indianapolis Coalition for Construction Safety (MICCS), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating injuries and illnesses on construction and facilities maintenance job sites. The organization's mission is to ensure that construction and maintenance workers return home safely to their families, friends, and communities.
History and Background
CCS evolved from MICCS, which was established in 1996. The goal of the organization has always been to achieve zero injuries on job sites. Over time, it expanded its reach beyond Indianapolis, leading to a rebranding as the Coalition for Construction Safety. CCS is governed by a Board of Directors representing various segments of the construction industry, including construction companies, users of construction services ("owners"), design professionals, and construction-affiliated organizations.
Programs and Initiatives
CCS offers a certification program designed to enhance workplace safety. This program involves a Home Office Audit (HOA), a Safety Program Review Score (SPRS), and safety metrics such as the Experience Modification Rate (EMR), Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), and Days Away from Work, Restricted Activity, or Job Transfer (DART). Companies that meet CCS requirements have shown significant improvements in safety performance, with contractors in the CCS Certification Program experiencing a 65% lower TRIR compared to the national average.
Training and Partnerships
CCS partners with recognized leaders in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) training to offer OSHA 10 and OSHA 30-hour training courses. These trainings are available in both English and Spanish. Additionally, CCS organizes events like the CCS Safety Directors Forum to provide insights into safety regulations and compliance.
Mission and Impact
The Coalition for Construction Safety's mission is centered on achieving a culture of zero injuries within the construction industry. By promoting innovative safety practices and rigorous standards, CCS aims to make job sites safer, ultimately ensuring the well-being of construction workers across the United States.
