A young Pygmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius) encountered by our team during a recent snake disease survey. These small rattlesnakes are still abundant at many places in Florida, but evidence suggests that populations are in decline. With rattles proportionally smaller than most other species of rattlesnake, the buzz of a Pygmy Rattlesnake may be inaudible to most. In the photo, you can see a small amount of lingering yellow coloration which juveniles used to lure prey - a behavior known as caudal luring. (fb)
