Little League Baseball, Inc.
Little League Baseball, Inc. is a nonprofit youth sports organization designed to assist children in developing discipline, teamwork, courage, loyalty, good character, and strong physical health. Founded in 1939 by Carl E. Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, it is recognized as the first organized youth sports program in the world.
History
Little League Baseball originated when Carl Stotz agreed to a game of catch with his nephews who were too young for regular organized baseball. He created a three-team league with smaller fields and equipment to accommodate younger players. The first Little League game was played on June 6, 1939. Initially sponsored by local businesses for a combined fee of $30, the league grew rapidly. By 1947, the first National Little League Tournament (now known as the Little League World Series) took place, and the first league outside Pennsylvania was established in New Jersey.
Growth and Expansion
Over the years, Little League has expanded significantly. By 1950, leagues were established at U.S. military installations outside the United States, and in 1951, the first permanent league was organized in British Columbia, Canada. As of 1999, Little League had spread to 100 countries. Today, it operates on six continents, providing opportunities for millions of children aged 4 to 16.
Structure
Little League is organized into four levels:
- Local Level: Each local league operates within specific geographical boundaries and is managed by a volunteer board of directors. It provides services such as teams, coaches, umpires, and facilities.
- District Level: Comprising 10 to 20 local leagues, districts organize tournaments and are overseen by District Administrators.
- Regional Level: Regions in the U.S. and internationally coordinate larger tournaments and provide support to local leagues.
- International Level: Based in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Little League International oversees global operations and maintains the integrity of the program.
Programs and Divisions
Little League offers various divisions:
- Tee Ball: For ages 4-7.
- Minor Leagues: For ages 7-12.
- Little League (or Major League): For ages 9-12.
- Junior League: For ages 13-14.
- Senior League: For ages 14-16.
- Big League: For ages 16-18. It also includes softball divisions for boys and girls across similar age ranges.
Mission and Philosophy
The mission of Little League focuses on developing the character of all children. Its philosophy emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring that every eligible child plays in every game. The organization also provides resources for parents, coaches, and volunteers through programs like Little League University.
Recent Developments
Little League continues to evolve with new initiatives and partnerships, emphasizing child safety and volunteer training. Starting in 2025, it will require background checks through a specified provider for all volunteers, along with abuse awareness training.
