Places where fast food chains outnumber supermarkets. Where grabbing an apple can take two bus rides. Where eating healthy isn’t a choice. It’s a privilege. Food deserts aren’t accidents. They’re the result of systemic inequality, disinvestment, and decades of policies that left certain neighborhoods behind. And the impact is real: higher rates of chronic illness, shorter life expectancy, and limited options for families just trying to get by. This month is a special month at Big Sunday as this month is dedicated to our 10k in May project! 10k in May, our annual food drive where we collect (at least) 10,000 cans, boxes, and bags of food during the month of May, is as important as ever. From folks still dealing with the fallout of this year's devastating fires, to new economic challenges, to the persistent problems folks face every year, we're particularly glad to be collecting and donating food to grateful folks all over town. Here's an excerpt from Thor about his new favorite tasty dessert! ~ I recently tried the Red Bean Bun dessert from Din Tai Fung, and it was soooo tasty! The soft, pillowy dough was warm and slightly sweet. Inside, the red bean paste was smooth and rich, with a subtle earthiness. It wasn't overly sugary, allowing the natural flavor of the beans to come through. The combination of textures and flavors made it a comforting and satisfying treat.
