Questers Inc

Questers Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, restoring, and educating the public about historical artifacts, memorials, buildings, and landmarks. Its mission is to keep history alive by supporting these efforts through research, study, and conservation of historical objects.

History

The organization was founded by Jessie Elizabeth Bardens in 1944, with its first meeting taking place on April 6 of that year. Initially, Bardens invited fourteen friends to bring a sandwich and an antique to pique curiosity about historical items. The organization grew, and by 1950, six chapters were established, eventually becoming a national organization in 1953 under Pennsylvania law. Jessie Bardens passed away in 1963. The Questers became an international organization in 1991, with chapters in the United States and Canada.

Objectives and Activities

• Preservation and Restoration: The organization focuses on preserving historical sites and artifacts through grants awarded at both international and state levels. These efforts help maintain historical integrity for the benefit of local and global communities.
• Education: Questers educate members and the public about historical significance through meetings, field trips, and themed events. They also provide historical education grants.
• Scholarship and Fellowship Programs: Questers support educational initiatives with a two-year scholarship at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and a three-year fellowship at the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation.

Structure

The organization is structured into local chapters, state/provincial chapters, and an international governing body. Members typically meet monthly from September through May for educational programs, historical presentations, and social interactions. State and provincial meetings focus on broader historical themes, often held in significant historical venues. An annual international convention brings together members from across the organization to highlight preservation projects and explore new historical sites.
