Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill is Kentucky’s largest National Historic Landmark. However, the Shaker Community declined after the Civil War due to economic pressures and diminishing membership. The last of the Shakers passing away by 1923. Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, operated by the nonprofit organization Shakertown at Pleasant Hill Kentucky, Inc., is a notable historical site and educational entity located in Mercer County, Kentucky. The village is situated on a large estate that once housed one of the largest Shaker communities in the United States.

History

The Shaker community at Pleasant Hill was established in the early 19th century. Shakerism arrived in Kentucky by 1805 when three missionaries from Mount Lebanon, New York, converted local residents Elisha Thomas, Samuel Banta, and Henry Banta to the faith. The community grew rapidly, and by 1808, its first meeting house was built. At its peak in the 1850s, the community encompassed approximately 600 members and 250 buildings spanning nearly 2,800 acres of land[2][3].

Architecture and Contributions

The architecture of Pleasant Hill was significantly influenced by Micajah Burnett, who joined the community in 1809. He adhered to the guidelines set by the Mount Lebanon ministry while incorporating Federal-style elements. Notable structures include the clapboard Meetinghouse, built in 1820, featuring an interior free of central obstructions to accommodate Shaker worship practices[2].

The Shakers were known for their innovative farming practices and crafts, producing goods like brooms, coopers ware, and preserves. They were early adopters of conservation methods and developed one of America's largest herds of registered Durham Shorthorn cattle, partnering with figures like Henry Clay[5].

Challenges and Dissolution

The community faced significant challenges, particularly during the Civil War, which strained their resources due to their pacifist beliefs and the nearby Battle of Perryville. The post-war industrial era further diminished their traditional way of life, leading to a decline in membership[3]. By 1910, only a handful of Shakers remained, and the community formally closed. The last Shaker in the area, Sister Mary Settles, died in 1923[3][5].

Restoration and Current Status

In 1961, a nonprofit organization was formed to restore the historic site. The restoration process, led by Earl D. Wallace and James Lowry Cogar, aimed to preserve the structures while ensuring the site's self-sufficiency through diversified revenue streams such as tourism, hospitality, and educational programs[5]. Today, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill covers over 3,000 acres and includes 34 original Shaker buildings, making it the largest restored Shaker community in the United States[4]. The site serves as a museum complex and a testament to the Shaker values of community, sustainability, and ingenuity[5].

Mission and Activities

Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, focusing on preserving the historical legacy of the Shakers while promoting contemporary values of sustainability and community engagement. The organization manages agricultural, environmental, and educational initiatives, including organic farming practices, native prairie conversion projects, and public environmental education programs[4].
