The US House passed its budget reconciliation package early this morning on a 215-214 vote with only Republicans supporting the measure. The proposals included in this sweeping bill would cut billions of dollars from Medicaid and other social services programs—potentially resulting in the loss of federal healthcare and food assistance support for hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans. These impacts will be felt most deeply by Minnesota’s seniors, individuals with disabilities, low-income, and rural Minnesotans. Among the amendments added to the bill late last night was a ban on the use of all federal Medicaid dollars for medical gender-affirming care including surgeries, puberty blockers, and hormones. This ban would apply to individuals of all ages, adults and youth alike. LGBTQ+ communities know what happens when the federal government turns its back on our healthcare needs; and OutFront Minnesota opposes this harmful bill. It is important to remember that this bill is not yet law. We can still prevent these life-threatening provisions from being passed. Now is the time for us to speak out.
