Meet Ayobami, a proud University of South Carolina graduate and current Evaluation Research Assistant at SC First Steps! Since August 2024, Ayobami has been instrumental in collecting data to evaluate the effectiveness of SC First Steps programs—focusing on parental practices, child outcomes, and overall family well-being. While gaining valuable hands-on experience, Ayobami also applied his work toward his master’s degree in public health and epidemiology. Along the way, he’s built a strong skill set in program evaluation, data analysis, and program implementation. “The experience I have had here has drawn me closer to early childhood because I am able to see the impact of programs… and the difference they make in the community—helping first-time mothers and supporting kids in reaching certain goals that will become long-term achievements in their lives,” he said. What’s next? After graduating on May 10, Ayobami hopes to continue working in the public sector—whether in a nonprofit or government agency. Meet Caleb, a graduating senior at the University of South Carolina and a dedicated First Five Intern with SC First Steps! Since September 2024, Caleb has worked to improve the First Five portal and eligibility screener, and created the “World of First Five” guide—making it easier for families to access free or low-cost services like childcare, wellness visits, and family support. Beyond technical support, Caleb kept outreach materials up to date and even presented at local conferences. “It was great hearing from people across different counties about their experiences—not just to benefit their own county, but to help everyone,” he shared. Through his internship, Caleb has built confidence in public speaking, leading meetings, and connecting with vendors and community partners. What’s next? After graduating on May 10 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, he plans to explore career paths in politics, business management, serving in the U.S. military, or continuing his education.
