West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition

The West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and advocating for passenger rail services in West Central Wisconsin. Established in 1999, the coalition has been instrumental in efforts to re-establish passenger rail service in the region.

Mission and Activities

The organization's primary mission is to provide leadership and coordination in developing passenger rail service through West Central Wisconsin. This involves advocating for rail expansion, conducting feasibility studies, and collaborating with local communities and state agencies to enhance transportation connectivity.

Key Initiatives

  1. Advocacy for Passenger Rail Expansion: The coalition advocates for the return of passenger rail service to cities like Eau Claire, Menomonie, and Baldwin. They emphasize the economic, environmental, and social benefits of rail transportation, including improved connectivity, economic growth, enhanced safety, and reduced environmental impact.

  2. Corridor Development: The coalition supports the development of rail corridors, including the Chippewa-St. Croix Regional Corridor, which aims to connect the Twin Cities to Eau Claire. This corridor is part of broader efforts to enhance rail infrastructure in the Midwest.

  3. Federal Funding and Support: The coalition benefits from federal initiatives, such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021, which provides significant funding for rail projects. In December 2023, the Federal Railroad Administration awarded grants for projects that include corridors through Eau Claire.

Partnerships and Collaborations

The coalition collaborates with various state and national organizations, including the Rail Passengers Association and All Aboard Wisconsin, to advance passenger rail interests across the region.

Goals and Future Plans

The ultimate goal is to see passenger trains operational in West Central Wisconsin by 2029. The coalition continues to work towards this objective through ongoing studies and public engagement efforts.

Public Support and Awareness

The organization engages in public awareness campaigns to highlight the benefits of passenger rail, including economic development, tourism growth, and sustainable transportation solutions. It also draws attention to the historical value of passenger rail in the region, as the last passenger trains in Eau Claire ceased operations in 1963.

Leadership and Legacy

Founding members, such as Owen Ayres, played crucial roles in shaping the coalition's vision and strategy. Their contributions have been instrumental in advancing the cause of passenger rail service in the region.

Financial Information

The West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition operates with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 472429225, indicating its status as a registered nonprofit organization.

Get on Board Eau Claire to Twin Cities Proposed Passenger Rail Corridor Since 1999 we have led the effort to reestablish passenger rail service through West Central Wisconsin. We have been at the forefront of nearly every milestone to bring passenger trains back to our region. With passage of the federal infrastructure bill in 2021 money became available to study expansion of passenger rail lines across the United States. In December of 2023 the Federal Rail Administration approved grants for many of these projects including three that would bring passenger trains back to Eau Claire Menomonie Baldwin Hudson and other communities.
