Leo and his sister watched as their father inflicted relentless abuse on their mother. Leo’s mother moved them away from the violence. Soon Leo’s sister began to have behavioral issues and was removed from the home. Leo’s mother, struggling to manage, failed to provide the care he needed. Leo was placed in foster homes. Upon arriving at Windwood, Leo exhibited combative behavior. While he didn’t start fights, he was quick to jump in hoping his engagement would earn him the attention he craved. Thanks to his Windwood support team, including his therapist, residential caregivers and nursing staff, Leo learned to take control of his behaviors. He avoided conflict, and began to focus on building healthy relationships. Several months into his treatment program, Leo received life-changing news. A couple was preparing to offer a child a second chance at a family. That child was Leo. Together, Leo and his adoptive parents began family therapy. This gave Leo’s new parents the opportunity to better understand his behaviors and develop strategies to ease Leo’s upcoming transition into his new home.
