𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 : 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐚𝐭 𝐔𝐍𝐏𝐀𝐑 Last November, JWB partnered with the Faculty of Law of Parahyangan Catholic University (UNPAR) for an impactful workshop focused on migrant workers' rights and legal protections. Over 20 students attended the workshop. Through a series of interactive games, role-play, and group work, students practised their case-solving skills and learnt how to advocate effectively for the rights of Indonesian migrant workers. Students also heard inspiring stories from individuals engaged in advocacy work, motivating them to support those in vulnerable positions. We hope these workshops can be held more regularly to raise students' awareness and empathy around social issues. Furthermore, students could explore new career opportunities other than traditional lawyering. Every year on 20th February, the United Nations celebrates #WorldDayofSocialJustice as an acknowledgement of the need to build a more just and inclusive world. Whenever a migrant worker faces exploitation or abuse working abroad, many are forced to go home before filing a claim, due to expired visa, high costs of staying and other family obligations. At JWB, we connect migrant workers to free legal assistance from frontline caseworkers and pro bono lawyers, so they can seek compensation even after returning home. By supporting cross border claims for migrant workers, we are breaking down financial barriers to justice, creating income security and promoting decent work in the long run.
