A few years ago, the gender gap in STEM performance between middle school girls and boys was nearly closed in the U.S. However, recent data from NWEA shows that post-pandemic, 8th-grade boys are now outperforming girls in math and science, especially among high-achieving students. Girls have not yet regained the academic ground lost during COVID-19 disruptions. In this article, Karen Peterson, CEO of NGCP, shared: “We didn’t have this all figured out before COVID. We weren’t there. There was still work to be done.” And now, as new barriers are emerging, support for girl-serving STEM programs is being cut.
