However, the first permanent Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California. Smedley's early clubs were designed to provide a supportive environment for experiential learning in public speaking and leadership. Toastmasters International was officially incorporated as a nonprofit under California law on December 19, 1932.

The organization expanded globally with its first international chapter opening in Vancouver, Canada, in 1932. A significant milestone was reached in 1973 when Toastmasters began admitting women, marking a shift towards a more inclusive membership policy. By the late 20th century, Toastmasters had grown significantly, with clubs across multiple continents.

Structure and Meetings
