Toastmasters International, Inc.
Toastmasters International, Inc., operates as a U.S.-based nonprofit educational organization, dedicated to helping individuals enhance their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills through local clubs worldwide. The organization, which began with a focus on training young men, has evolved into a global entity with diverse membership.
History
The concept of Toastmasters was first initiated by Ralph C. Smedley in 1905 while working at the YMCA in Bloomington, Illinois, aiming to improve the speech skills of young men. However, the first permanent Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California. Smedley's early clubs were designed to provide a supportive environment for experiential learning in public speaking and leadership. Toastmasters International was officially incorporated as a nonprofit under California law on December 19, 1932.
The organization expanded globally with its first international chapter opening in Vancouver, Canada, in 1932. A significant milestone was reached in 1973 when Toastmasters began admitting women, marking a shift towards a more inclusive membership policy. By the late 20th century, Toastmasters had grown significantly, with clubs across multiple continents.
Structure and Meetings
Toastmasters International operates through local clubs, with each club typically consisting of 20 to 40 members. Meetings are usually held weekly or biweekly and follow a structured format. The meetings include prepared speeches, Table Topics (impromptu speeches), and evaluations where members receive feedback from more experienced speakers. This structure helps members build confidence in public speaking, think critically, and communicate effectively.
Roles within the club include:
- Chairman: Leads the initial part of the meeting, often including an introduction circle.
- Word Master: Introduces the Word of the Day.
- Toastmaster: Guides the meeting, introducing speakers and events.
- Table Topics Master: Assigns impromptu speech topics.
- Evaluator: Provides constructive feedback to speakers.
- Timer: Monitors speech lengths.
- Grammarian: Identifies and corrects grammatical errors.
Education Programs
Toastmasters International offers several educational programs designed to enhance members' communication and leadership skills. Key programs include:
- Pathways: A modern education system with eleven paths focused on public speaking, communication, and leadership development. Each path consists of 14 projects and offers materials in multiple languages.
- Speechcraft: A short-term program led by experienced members to introduce non-members to Toastmasters techniques.
- Competent Communication Manual: A foundational manual guiding members through ten speeches aimed at developing basic communication skills.
Global Impact and Recognition
As of recent years, Toastmasters International has served over four million people and currently operates with over 358,000 members across 141 countries. The organization hosts a prestigious global public speaking championship, attracting thousands of participants annually. This championship, established in 1938, showcases the organization's commitment to nurturing public speaking abilities worldwide.
Toastmasters International is recognized for its significant contributions to promoting communication skills globally, making it one of the largest and most influential educational organizations in this field.
