BILLY RAY SHIRLEY III FOUNDATION
The Billy Ray Shirley III Foundation is a U.S. nonprofit organization founded in September 2011 in honor of Billy Ray Shirley, III. Billy Ray was a 17-year-old young man from Tacoma, Washington, who dedicated his life to serving his community, advocating for the creation of a local community center to address the lack of facilities and opportunities for youth in his neighborhood.
Founding and Purpose
Following Billy Ray's tragic death by homicide in August 2011, his mother, Shalisa Hayes, established the foundation with the mission of realizing Billy Ray's dream of building a community center on the east side of Tacoma. The foundation's overarching goal is to support youth development and engage in efforts to prevent youth violence.
Activities and Achievements
One of the foundation's most notable achievements was the establishment of the Eastside Community Center, a 55,000-square-foot facility that opened on October 20, 2018. The center features various amenities, including a swimming pool, social hall, gym, and a music recording studio named after Billy Ray Shirley, III. This facility serves as a hub for community engagement, providing a safe space for youth activities and programs aimed at preventing violence.
Community Impact
The foundation's work has inspired many to contribute to community development. By engaging youth and adults in fundraising and advocacy efforts, it has fostered a sense of community responsibility and encouraged young people to become active in making positive changes. The foundation also supports initiatives that promote youth safety and well-being.
Legacy and Recognition
Billy Ray's legacy extends beyond the physical infrastructure of the community center. His story has motivated many, including his peers who became part of "Team Billy Ray," to work towards creating safer, more supportive communities. In recognition of his contributions, a bronze life-size statue of Billy Ray was installed at the Eastside Community Center in October 2021.
Related Initiatives
In addition to the foundation's core work, Shalisa Hayes has also founded Mothers of Magnitude, an organization dedicated to supporting mothers who have lost children or loved ones. This initiative reflects Hayes's broader commitment to community healing and empowerment.
