Special Lake County price for our workshop Taking a Closer Look: The Ecology of Summer Lake Through an Artist's Lens! During this 5-night workshop led by artist/scientist Jerri Bartholomew, we’ll use the tools of art and science to explore how water, and lack of water, shape the unique ecosystems of Summer Lake. In the field, we’ll map and examine the plants and soil from two ecosystems that feed the lake, as well as from the dry lake itself. In the studio, we’ll examine locally collected material using lenses and microscopes to see complexities you can’t see with your naked eye. Using drawing and gel printing, and/or a medium of your choice, you will explore how perception changes with scale and how data can be incorporated into and inform art. In this workshop we will not only explore Summer Lake, but the waters that are associated with it: the streams that flow from the Fremont-Winema Forest (Harvey Creek), and the ODFW wildlife refuge through which the Ana River flows. This workshop teaches how to view the ecosystem at different scales – from a landscape scale map of the lake and waters that feed it, to fine structures viewed under a microscope. This information will then be incorporated into the artwork to provide context and visual richness. Participants will keep a notebook and will create a collection of annotated prints or booklets describing the different ecosystems. $249 -- stay a home From $389 -- stay at PLAYA for 5 nights! email us to book! Reason #6 to Support PLAYA: Themed Awarded Residencies! ✨✨ PLAYA needs your donation now more than ever – help us raise $48,000 by June 30! Your donation keeps PLAYA running and supports Themed Residencies like Wildfire + Water. Kathleen Dean Moore, a 2024-2025 alumni, shares how this residency gave her and her cohorts the rare experience of unexpected learning and discovery: Here PLAYA stands, between the silent tracks of mammoths in stone and the baying of newborn calves, between Summer Lake and Winter Ridge, beside a shimmering plain where the past meets the future and science meets art. It’s a lively place, sounding with laughter and the rattle of sandhill cranes. You smell juniper and tempura paint. There are a thousand questions and not nearly enough answers, and when your visit is over, you will wish you could stay forever in this thriving ecosystem of ideas and imagination. And here we stand, you and I, at a hinge point in history, when the door to the future swings open and shut. By convening past and future, artists and scientists, ideas and landscape, and by giving them time and place to interact, PLAYA nurtures essential truth-telling and fires the human imagination. What could be more important — as humanity faces existential crises that call for one of the greatest exercises of the human imagination the world has ever seen? My experience at PLAYA’s Wildfire + Water will always rank among the more intriguing and consequential of my writing life. —Kathleen Dean Moore Donating feels good!
