Kansas Association of Addiction Professionals

The Kansas Association of Addiction Professionals (KAAP) is a nonprofit organization based in Kansas, dedicated to serving the addiction counseling profession within the state. Established from the merger of the Kansas Alcoholism Counselors Association and the Kansas Association of Drug Abuse Counselors in the 1980s, KAAP has evolved to become the largest addiction services trade association in Kansas.

History

The roots of KAAP trace back to the early 1970s when counselors working in alcoholism treatment in Kansas began organizing to support one another. Over several decades, as the understanding of addiction treatment evolved, the organization merged with other groups, ultimately forming the Kansas Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Counselors Association (KADACA). In 2000, KADACA was restructured into the Kansas Association of Addiction Professionals.

In 2011, KAAP played a critical role in the creation of the Addiction Counselor Licensure Act, which redefined the certification process for addiction professionals in Kansas, phasing out previously held certifications in favor of a licensure system. This legislation positioned KAAP as a key player in advocating for better policies and legislative changes regarding addiction treatment and prevention in the state.

Mission and Activities

KAAP's mission is to "serve members with advocacy and support to achieve excellence in addiction prevention and treatment." The organization focuses on advocating for improved laws and a greater allocation of resources toward addiction treatment and prevention efforts. Additionally, KAAP provides professional development opportunities for its members, promoting education and the dissemination of evidence-based practices in addiction counseling.

Professional Development and Advocacy

KAAP is committed to enhancing professional standards within the addiction counseling field. It offers various resources, including educational workshops, networking opportunities, and information on the latest trends in addiction treatment. By fostering a community among addiction professionals, KAAP aims to combat substance abuse and support individuals in recovery throughout Kansas.

As an advocacy organization, KAAP actively participates in legislative processes, lobbying for policies that improve addiction treatment access and quality. The organization collaborates with various stakeholders, including government agencies and other nonprofit organizations, to strengthen the support network for addiction professionals and their clients.

Conclusion

The Kansas Association of Addiction Professionals plays a vital role in supporting addiction counselors in Kansas through advocacy, education, and professional development. With a storied history and a commitment to excellence in the field of addiction treatment, KAAP continues to be a leading voice for addiction professionals in the state.
