Institute for Social Policy and Understanding

The Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) is a nonprofit research organization focused on the American Muslim community. Established in 2002, ISPU is recognized for its objective research and educational initiatives aimed at fostering informed dialogue and decision-making about Muslims in America.

History

ISPU was formed in response to the need for deeper understanding of the Islamic community following significant global events like the September 11 attacks. It officially incorporated in December 2003. Since its inception, ISPU has become a key resource for insights into American Muslim experiences, attitudes, and social dynamics.

Research Areas and Projects

ISPU's research spans several critical areas:

• Developing Community: This involves studying family dynamics, wellness, and community capacity-building to support American Muslim families and communities.
• Building Understanding: ISPU works to protect American pluralism by quantifying Muslim contributions and analyzing the experiences of Muslims in various settings, such as mosques and community centers.

• American Muslim Poll: Conducted biannually since 2016, this poll captures trends and experiences of American Muslims, as well as other faith groups, to provide a broader understanding of the religious landscape in the United States.
• Studying Marriage and Divorce: Analyzing marriage and divorce patterns among American Muslims to identify trends and challenges.
• Countering Violent Extremism (CVE): ISPU conducts research on strategies to prevent ideologically motivated violence and promote community resilience.
• Islamophobia and Media Bias: Investigating how media coverage affects perceptions of Muslims and analyzing Islamophobic trends.

• Dalia Mogahed: Director of Research, known for her work in polling and as a former member of a White House advisory council.
