Overview

The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras Foundation Inc, commonly known as WYSO, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing music education and performance opportunities to youth in southern Wisconsin. Founded in 1966 by Dr. Marvin Rabin, WYSO has grown to serve thousands of students by offering a variety of orchestral and ensemble programs.

Programs and Activities

WYSO encompasses multiple ensembles, including:

  • Three full orchestras
  • Two string orchestras
  • Chamber music programs
  • A harp program
  • A percussion ensemble
  • The WYSO Music Makers program

These programs are designed to enrich the lives of young musicians by providing transformative musical experiences and fostering a lifelong connection with music.

History

WYSO originated as a single youth orchestra associated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Extension Music Department. Under the leadership of Dr. Rabin, it expanded significantly, adding additional orchestras throughout the years. The organization experienced pivotal developments, such as the introduction of international tours and the construction of a dedicated facility, the WYSO Center for Music, which opened in early 2024. This new 40,085 square foot facility includes rehearsal halls, practice rooms, and administrative spaces, consolidating WYSO's programs under one roof.

Concert Series

WYSO annually hosts a series of concerts featuring its orchestras and smaller ensembles, including:

  • Evelyn Steenbock Fall Concert Series (November)
  • Diane Ballweg Winterfest Concert Series (March)
  • Eugenie Mayer Bolz Family Spring Concert Series (May)

These performances provide students with opportunities to showcase their talents to the community.

Financial Information

As a 501(c)(3) organization, WYSO is funded primarily through contributions, which account for the vast majority of its revenue. It also offers scholarships to ensure accessibility for all students, with tuition fees representing less than 30% of the total cost per student. The organization relies on community support to maintain its programs and facilities.

Notable Alumni

WYSO has produced numerous accomplished musicians who have pursued professional careers in music, including:

  • Kenneth Woods, music director of the English Symphony Orchestra
  • Scott Pingel, principal bassist of the San Francisco Symphony
  • Nancy Goeres, principal bassoonist of the Pittsburgh Symphony
  • Andrew Balio, principal trumpet of the Baltimore Symphony
  • Ansel Norris, trumpet player and International Tchaikovsky Competition prizewinner

WYSO continues to play a crucial role in developing the musical talents of youth in the region and fostering a vibrant musical community.
