Friends of Loring Park Inc. is an all-volunteer, tax-exempt nonprofit organization established in 1997, dedicated to the preservation, improvement, and support of Loring Park, a historic urban park located in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. The organization operates under the Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) and is recognized for its commitment to enhancing the natural beauty and community usability of Loring Park, which was originally designed in 1883 and named in honor of Charles Loring, the first president of the Minneapolis Park Board.

Mission

The mission of Friends of Loring Park is to foster a vibrant and engaged community by advocating for and executing improvement projects in Loring Park. This includes partnering with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to ensure that the park remains a welcoming space for all residents and visitors.

History

Friends of Loring Park began as a garden sub-committee of the Citizens for a Loring Park Community (CLPC) and transitioned to an independent nonprofit in 1997. The organization was formed to implement a long-term improvement plan for Loring Park, originally developed by Balmori Associates. Key early board members included Ione Siegel, Lee Frelich, and Marcia Stout, who sought to restore and enhance the park’s facilities and landscaping.

Projects and Initiatives

Since its inception, Friends of Loring Park has spearheaded numerous projects aimed at the restoration and enhancement of the park's features, including:

• Berger Fountain Restoration: Initiatives to restore and expand the plaza surrounding Berger Fountain, including ongoing fundraising efforts.

• Garden of the Seasons: Design and installation of this community garden, which serves as a centerpiece for educational and recreational activities.

• Community Events: Hosting events such as spring gardening celebrations, community sing-alongs, and various seasonal festivals to engage the community and raise awareness about park conservation.

• Guest Artist Program: A platform to feature local artists and provide cultural programming within the park, enhancing its role as a community focal point.

Accomplishments

Throughout its 20+ years of operation, Friends of Loring Park has achieved significant milestones that include:

• Establishing multiple community-maintained gardens throughout Loring Park.

• Developing facilities and amenities such as playground equipment, outdoor chess tables, and a rain garden at the Community Arts Building.

• Supporting community initiatives such as the Project 515 Pathway to Equality, which commemorated marriage equality through an installation of bricks acknowledging individuals and relationships.
