The organization operates under the Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) and is recognized for its commitment to enhancing the natural beauty and community usability of Loring Park, which was originally designed in 1883 and named in honor of Charles Loring, the first president of the Minneapolis Park Board.

Friends of Loring Park began as a garden sub-committee of the Citizens for a Loring Park Community (CLPC) and transitioned to an independent nonprofit in 1997. The organization was formed to implement a long-term improvement plan for Loring Park, originally developed by Balmori Associates. Key early board members included Ione Siegel, Lee Frelich, and Marcia Stout, who sought to restore and enhance the park’s facilities and landscaping.
