I’ve long said that as an industry we’ve done a poor job of communicating that theatre is a public good, so it’s something that governments and philanthropic organizations have had an easy time cutting. But the arts are a public good. They inform conversations, they teach empathy, they both tell us where we are in the world and yet somehow cause us to step away from where we are and travel somewhere else in our minds.
