Description

Boy Scouts of America, Mid-America Council

The Boy Scouts of America, Mid-America Council, is a regional division of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), serving several states including Nebraska, Iowa, and parts of South Dakota. It was established in 1965 through the merger of the Covered Wagon Council and the Southwest Iowa Council. In 2000, the council expanded further by merging with the Prairie Gold Area Council in Sioux City, Iowa.

Mission

The Mid-America Council's mission is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. This includes developing character, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership skills.

Programs

The council offers various Scouting programs designed for different age groups and development levels:

  • Cub Scouting: For children aged 6 to 11, focusing on character development and skill-building activities.
  • Scouts BSA: Focuses on leadership and character development for youth aged 11 to 17.
  • Venturing: Offers advanced leadership training and adventure activities for youth in high school and college.
  • Exploring: A career education program for youth aged 14 to 20.

Territory and Service Area

The council provides services across 102 counties in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Following a unification in 2024 with the Overland Trails Council, it expanded its reach to additional areas in Nebraska, enhancing opportunities for youth in the region.

Campsites

The council operates Camp Augustine, located in Doniphan near Grand Island, Nebraska, which serves as a primary camping facility for Scouting events and activities.

Order of the Arrow Lodge

The Order of the Arrow lodge associated with the Mid-America Council is Tatanka Anpetu-Wi, #94. The Order of the Arrow is a key component of BSA, focusing on service and the promotion of camping, leadership, and outdoor skills.
