International Association of Lions Clubs
Overview

The International Association of Lions Clubs, commonly known as Lions Clubs International, is a renowned international service organization. It was founded on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, by Melvin Jones, a prominent Chicago businessman. Jones envisioned expanding the focus of local business clubs beyond professional concerns to improve communities worldwide[1][2].

History

The organization's foundational meeting was held at the Hotel LaSalle in Chicago, marking the beginning of a new era in community service. Later that year, the first national convention took place in Dallas, Texas, where a constitution, by-laws, and a code of ethics were adopted. The association chose the name "Lions Clubs" and elected Dr. William P. Woods as its first president, with Melvin Jones serving as secretary-treasurer[3][4].

In 1920, the association went international with the establishment of the first Lion Club in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. This expansion continued over the decades, with significant growth in the 1950s and 1960s as clubs were established across Europe, Asia, and Africa[1][3].

Mission and Activities

Lions Clubs International is dedicated to unselfish service. The motto of the organization is "We Serve," and its slogan is "Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation's Safety" (LIONS). Key areas of focus include sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, and environmental protection. The organization forbids discussions of partisan politics and sectarian religion, ensuring a broad and inclusive membership base[2][4].

One of the most notable initiatives of Lions Clubs International is the SightFirst program, launched in 1990. This program aims to combat preventable and reversible blindness globally by providing critical healthcare services. In addition to sight conservation, Lions also engage in youth development through programs like the Leo Clubs, which foster personal growth and community service among young people[1][2].

International Collaboration

Lions Clubs International has a long-standing relationship with the United Nations. The organization played a role in the formation of the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) sections of the UN in 1945 and holds consultative status with the organization[1][3].

Membership and Structure

As of recent years, Lions Clubs International has over 1.4 million members in more than 44,600 clubs across 190 countries. The organization is headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, and operates a vast network of service clubs globally. Despite its immense size, the organization remains non-political and focused on service[1][2].

Lions Clubs International is recognized by its iconic emblem, which features two lions facing outward, symbolizing a proud past and a confident future. The organization's official colors are purple and gold, representing loyalty, integrity, and generosity[1].

I work in a nonprofit and listing our organization on Eduo.org helped us reach new audiences and even new volunteers. It’s easy to use and feels built with love.
