United Leukodystrophy Foundation, Inc.
The United Leukodystrophy Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to the leukodystrophy community and accelerating improvements in patient quality of life and searching for cures. Founded in 1982, this foundation is focused on addressing a group of rare, progressive diseases known as leukodystrophies, which affect the white matter of the brain by disrupting the myelin sheath.
Mission and Vision
The foundation's mission is to provide support to individuals and families affected by leukodystrophy, while promoting research into the causes, treatments, and prevention of these diseases. It aims to meet the needs of both newly diagnosed patients and those living with leukodystrophy, fostering collaboration with advocacy groups, medical and research professionals, and pharmaceutical companies.
Activities
Education and Advocacy: The United Leukodystrophy Foundation offers educational materials and promotes awareness among health care providers and the public. It supports various programs aimed at educating patients, families, and medical professionals about leukodystrophies.
Research Funding: The foundation supports medical research by issuing grants to research proposals that show potential for advancing treatments and understanding of leukodystrophies. Proposals are reviewed by a Medical and Scientific Advisory Board based on their merit and potential impact.
Support Services: It provides referrals for support groups and offers resources such as newsletters and other educational materials to help families manage the disease.
Annual Events: The organization hosts a Scientific Symposium and a Family Conference, which are integral for exchanging information among professionals and providing the latest scientific updates to families.
Types of Leukodystrophies
The foundation focuses on a wide range of leukodystrophies, including but not limited to Metachromatic Leukodystrophy, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease, Alexander Disease, Canavan Disease, and X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy.
Funding
The United Leukodystrophy Foundation relies entirely on donations to fund its initiatives and research grants. Since 2015, it has granted over $215,000 for medical research.
History and Impact
Established more than four decades ago, the organization has played a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting research into leukodystrophies. It has successfully supported the leukodystrophy community through various programs and continues to strive for better treatments and care for affected individuals and families.
