The roots of Toastmasters International trace back to 1905 when Ralph C. Smedley initiated informal speaking clubs while working at the YMCA in Bloomington, Illinois. Ralph Smedley left the YMCA in 1940 to focus full-time on Toastmasters, developing materials such as "Basic Training," which became foundational to the organization.

In the 1960s, Toastmasters began to shift from traditional oratory styles to more modern and practical communication techniques. The first women's auxiliary Toastmasters clubs were allowed in the mid-1960s. However, it wasn't until 1973 that women were officially admitted as full members. Upon completing these speeches, members can progress to Advanced Communication Manuals, which further develop skills in areas such as research, persuasive speaking, and using visual aids.
