Overview
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to improving public speaking, leadership, and communication skills. Founded by Ralph C. Smedley in 1924, the organization has grown globally, with more than 14,000 clubs in over 150 countries today.
History
The roots of Toastmasters International trace back to 1905 when Ralph C. Smedley initiated informal speaking clubs while working at the YMCA in Bloomington, Illinois. However, these early clubs dissolved as he moved to different locations. The first official Toastmasters club, known as Club No. 1, was formed on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California. Smedley's vision was to create an environment where individuals could practice public speaking and leadership skills in a supportive setting.
In 1932, Toastmasters International was incorporated as a nonprofit organization. By 1935, the first international club was established in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The organization continued to expand globally, with District 18 in Scotland becoming the first foreign district in 1946. Ralph Smedley left the YMCA in 1940 to focus full-time on Toastmasters, developing materials such as "Basic Training," which became foundational to the organization.
Expansion and Development
In the 1960s, Toastmasters began to shift from traditional oratory styles to more modern and practical communication techniques. The first women's auxiliary Toastmasters clubs were allowed in the mid-1960s. However, it wasn't until 1973 that women were officially admitted as full members. This change significantly boosted membership, doubling it over the next decade. Helen Blanchard, who initially joined under a pseudonym, became the first female International President in 1985.
Throughout the decades, Toastmasters has expanded its educational programs, introducing new manuals and recognition systems that encourage members to develop both communication and leadership skills. Key milestones include the introduction of the Competent Communication Manual and the Development of Advanced Leadership Programs.
Club Structure and Meetings
A typical Toastmasters club consists of about 20 to 30 members who meet regularly, usually weekly or biweekly, for about two hours. Meetings are structured to include prepared speeches, impromptu speaking (Table Topics), evaluations, and various roles that help members practice different skills. Roles include the Chairman, Toastmaster, Table Topics Master, Evaluator, Timer, and Grammarian.
Educational Programs
The primary educational tool is the Competent Communication Manual, which guides members through ten speeches designed to improve basic public speaking skills. Upon completing these speeches, members can progress to Advanced Communication Manuals, which further develop skills in areas such as research, persuasive speaking, and using visual aids.
Growth and Impact
Today, Toastmasters International is a global network with over 270,000 members in more than 14,000 clubs. The organization continues to evolve, adding newer educational programs and adapting to technological changes while maintaining its core mission of enhancing communication and leadership abilities.
