Seventh and eighth grade students visited the Historic Neely School in southern Rowan County as part of their American history studies. The Neely School was founded in 1910 by Julius Erastus Neely and served African American students in the area until 1948. SA students had the privilege of meeting several members of the Neely family, including a former student, Mary Neely Grissom. The afternoon brought history to life through questions, a wooded hike, and a tour of the schoolhouse. Students left with a renewed understanding of the courage and persistence that families showed to ensure an education for their children during a tumultuous time in American history. #TheWorldAsOurClassroom salisburyacademy.org (fb)
