With major federal cuts around the corner, we cannot afford to spend $1.2 BILLION on police and prisons next year. That’s why we rallied outside City Hall to demand city council reallocate that money to underfunded public schools, parks, libraries, and critical social services that create real community safety. We are also demanding that City Council pressure the mayor’s administration to fight for the recently created Citizens Police Oversight Commission to be able to fulfill its mission and perform full and independent investigations. Finally, we are calling on the city to affirm its status as a sanctuary city and pledge to not share information or resources with federal ICE agencies. At a time when the federal government is slashing our social safety net and disappearing people who resist their agenda, we need our city government to protect us. (fb)
