🇺🇸 Fun Fact Friday: Fort McHenry Edition! 🏰🎆 One of the final—and most unforgettable—stops on our Honor Flight trips to Washington, D.C. is Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. Why is this star-shaped fort so special? 💥 Fun Fact: During the War of 1812, Fort McHenry successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from a British naval attack on September 13–14, 1814. That 25-hour bombardment inspired a young lawyer named Francis Scott Key to write a poem after seeing the American flag still flying the next morning. That poem? “The Star-Spangled Banner.” 🇺🇸 That same flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, still resides in the Smithsonian—and the spirit of its resilience is felt every time our veterans stand in front of Fort McHenry’s massive ramparts and hear our national anthem. 🎖 “O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave…” takes on a whole new meaning when you’ve worn the uniform.
