Description

Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.

Introduction

Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. (BSMA) is a private, non-partisan, non-political, and non-sectarian nonprofit organization in the United States. It was originally founded to support mothers who have sons or daughters in active service in the U.S. Armed Forces, with roots tracing back to World War II.

History

The organization's history dates to January 22, 1942, when a local newspaper in Flint, Michigan, printed a coupon inviting mothers of servicemen to respond. This initiative led to the first meeting of about 300 mothers on February 1, 1942, at the Durant Hotel. Captain George H. Maines, who conceived the idea, acted as the chair of this gathering. The organization was formally chartered by Congress in June 1960.

Membership and Structure

Membership in the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. includes mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians whose children are serving or have served in the military. In 2011, the organization expanded its membership eligibility to include these broader categories of family members, reflecting changes in family structures and supporting mothers living outside the U.S.

Associate members can also join, including fathers and other family members, though they do not have voting rights. The organization operates through local chapters and departments in various states. Each chapter requires a minimum of five members to form.

Mission and Activities

The primary mission of Blue Star Mothers is to support active duty troops, promote patriotism, and aid veterans and their families. Activities include emotional support services for members, volunteer work in veteran hospitals, and support for homeland security efforts. They also provide care packages, medical supplies, transportation, and other forms of assistance.

Recognition and Governance

Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. holds a congressional charter under Title 36 of the United States Code. The organization does not have a permanent headquarters, as its national office moves with each new national president.

Impact

Over the years, BSMA has seen fluctuations in membership, peaking at around 30,000 during World War II. By 2014, it had grown to over 7,500 members across approximately 200 chapters. As of recent updates, the organization continues to expand its support network, now comprising nearly 6,000 members.

Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. remains a critical support system for military families, fostering a sense of patriotism and respect for members of the Armed Forces.
