Did you know tuna is a key driver of international cooperation in the Pacific Islands? 🐟 Fish is an important natural resource in many countries of the Pacific. Tuna in particular has a lot of influence because of high global demand for the fish. 🐟 According to Conservation International,“1.4 million metric tons of tuna are caught in the waters of Pacific Island countries each year, supplying more than 30 percent of the global market for tuna.” 🐟 But not only is tuna a crucial resource, it’s a shared one! 🐟 Since the establishment of the Pacific Island Forum in 1971, countries in the region have worked closely together to manage shared maritime resources. 🐟 International bodies like the Pacific Islands Fishery Forum and the Parties to the Nauru Agreement facilitate cooperation between nations and promote conservation and efficient use of marine wealth. 🐟 In this way, tuna trade has strengthened diplomatic ties in the Pacific Islands region!
