Registered as a 501(c)(6) entity, ALVMA focuses on fostering professional education, knowledge sharing, and advocacy within the veterinary community in Alabama.
History
The precursor to the ALVMA held its first organizational meeting in 1891, with Dr. A. H. French as its president. However, the modern organization was formally reestablished in 1907 during a reorganizational meeting at Auburn, Alabama. The association has been active in influencing state laws and regulations related to veterinary practice and animal disease control since its inception.
Mission and Activities
ALVMA's mission is to enhance the knowledge and skills of its members while promoting scientific discoveries in veterinary medicine. The association achieves this through annual conventions and conferences, providing a platform for veterinarians to stay updated on the latest developments in the field. These events serve as educational forums where leading veterinarians present papers and demonstrations, contributing to the growth and development of veterinary professionals.
Governance and Structure
The ALVMA has approximately 750 members, including veterinarians and veterinary students. Its president, Steven Murphree, leads the organization. ALVMA collaborates with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, as it is involved in the nomination process for board members.
Financials
In 2022, ALVMA reported a revenue of $354,053, primarily derived from membership dues and convention income. The organization does not compensate its executive officers or incur professional fundraising fees.
Membership Benefits
ALVMA offers resources, networking opportunities, and advocacy for its members. Benefits include discounted continuing education, career assistance, wellness resources, and access to the latest veterinary news and regulations. Membership dues vary, with discounted rates for students and recent graduates.
Impact
By supporting professional development and advocacy, ALVMA plays a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of animals in Alabama. Its efforts contribute to the advancement of veterinary medicine through education, community engagement, and policy influence.
