Time to meet another of our honorees at the N.C. Heritage Awards show on Saturday! Helen Gibson is woodcarver based in Brasstown, in far Western North Carolina, and raised among the Brasstown Carvers, a community group established by the founder of the John C. Campbell Folk School. Gibson has been the school’s resident carver since 1990, practicing and teaching her craft to generations of apprentices and other learners. She’s best known for finely detailed nativity scene carvings that incorporate classic Brasstown elements as well as her own creative touches.
